Music Video Flashback: Declan McKenna’s Brazil

Tuesday Lachlan
Tuesday is a student by day and a ravenous fan of women's soccer by night and by weekend and by any other time she can catch a game. A lover of eclectic playlists, funny people and awkward situations, Tuesday is always looking for the next Jodie Comer. Or Flo Pugh. Or Hailee Steinfeld. Or Leah Williamson. Or Alexia Putellas. Basically, exceptional women with great senses of humor. You need one to be a woman in this mad world.

What good is a weekend without a catchy song to play?

For your listening (and watching!) pleasure, I submit Brazil, by Declan McKenna. For you Gen X’ers and Boomers who haven’t heard of him, he’s a British singer who penned this song in 2015 to protest the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. That’s why you’ll hear references to “the beautiful game”.

Most importantly, the song is an earworm and you’ll be humming the refrain all weekend long. The lyrics are below if you want to follow along. I saw that there were two “official” videos on YouTube, so I posted both of them , but the top one is more visually engaging.

With that, please enjoy Brazil, written and performed by Declan McKenna.

Brazil Lyrics

Written by: Declan McKenna

I heard you sold the Amazon
To show the country that you’re from
Is where the world should want to be
For a fine something all people need
I’m faithless now
Though we win every time and I don’t know how
‘Cause I haven’t bought you and I haven’t sold me
But the people are dying to get on TV

I heard he lives down a river somewhere
With six cars and a grizzly bear
He’s got eyes, but he can’t see
Well he talks like an angel, but he looks like me

Oh, Lord!
What have I become?
I’m the face of God, I’m my father’s son
I’m not what you think you see
I know you can’t eat leather, but you can’t stop me
Why would you lie, why would you lie about how you feel?
I’ve got a mission and my mission is real
Because you’ve had your chances, yeah you’ve had enough
I’m gonna burn your house down to spread peace and love
And it gets me down
Oh, Lord, how it gets me down

I heard he lives down a river somewhere
With six cars and a grizzly bear
He’s got eyes, but he can’t see
Well he talks like an angel, but he looks like me
Oh, Lord!

I wanna play the beautiful game while I’m in Brazil
‘Cause everybody plays the beautiful game out in Brazil
And it’s all you’ve ever wanted, and it’s all that you want still
Don’t you wanna play the beautiful game out in Brazil?
I wanna play the beautiful game while I’m in Brazil
‘Cause everybody plays the beautiful game out in Brazil
And it’s all you’ve ever wanted, and it’s all that you want still
Don’t you wanna play the beautiful game out in Brazil?

I heard he lives down a river somewhere
With six cars and a grizzly bear
He’s got eyes, but he can’t see
Well he talks like an angel, but he looks like me

I heard he lives down a river somewhere
With six cars and a grizzly bear
He’s got eyes, but he can’t see
Well he talks like an angel, but he looks like me

I was listening to M.I.A.’s ultra-catchy Paper Planes today when I realized that it’s 14 years old and still a banger. It was originally released in 2007 but really hit the public consciousness when it was included on the soundtrack of Slumdog Millionaire the following year. The song is super catchy, but the part of it that always haunts me…

Lyric of the Day – George Michael ‘Praying for Time’

From George Michael’s 1990 Album Listen Without Prejudice Vol. 1 The lyrics are from the song ‘Praying For Time’. Are they appropriate for everything going on in the world today? I’ll let you be the judge of that, but George Michael, who sadly passed away in December of 2016, was certainly onto something. At least he didn’t have to live…
