When new gameplay footage from Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 dropped during this week’s PlayStation Showcase, fans were filled with a mix of excitement and dread upon seeing Peter Parker sporting the black symbiote suit. And a closer look at this new footage offers up clues that things are about to get really bad for Spidey.

First off we have the cool and classic symbiote suit and all the new abilities that come with it. Thanks to the new alien accoutrement, Spider-Man has more tentacles than Japanese erotica. So that’s pretty cool. He’ll need all the help he can get to fend off Kraven’s muscle — and what appears to be a self-destructing robo-cheetah. Damn that’s awesome.

But as anyone who is slightly familiar with the franchise knows, bad things are coming.

The first warning sign is Peter Parker suddenly sounds like he’s trying to do Christian Bale’s Batman voice. That’s never good.

One great aspect of this sequel is the ability to swap between the definitely not-turning-evil Parker and Miles Morales, who is now fully into his Spider-Manning duties. In the trailer, we see Peter call on Miles for an assist, but the usually jocular Parker cuts the small talk. This does not bode well for you, Miles.

Our biggest warning signs yet about Peter’s inevitable heel turn come in rapid succession near the end of the trailer. The first one is a bit subtle. We see Parker pull a nearby onlooker to safety (that’s good) — only to yeet him to the side carelessly (that’s bad). And Miles definitely noticed.

When Peter insists that he take care of tracking down the Lizard alone, Miles remarks, “He’s got big teeth.”

“So do I,” Peter responds, stealing a play from the Big Bad Wolf himself.

With his mentor dropping a sinister bon mot like that, Miles knows things are only starting to go bad. Maybe this will make you think twice about leveling up Peter too much during your first playthrough. It appears it may come back to bite you in the end.
