The Concept Grabbed Me, The Execution Kept Me

The other day, a friend told me “It’s getting more and more difficult to remember who we are supposed to hate.”

That’s the thing about the interconnected world, and social media, and always knowing who’s dating who and who’s a shit and who’s a liar and who’s a bastard: our brains are not designed to keep track of this many people, much less hold onto their every wrong, and carry the grudge of their misdeeds with us until the end of our days. Or theirs.

I just don’t have the energy anymore.

Case in point: I posted a clip of Bill Burr on another site that I write for, a site that is primarily populated by a very progressive-minded type of person. My type of person, frankly. On that site, Bill Burr is not well liked. I don’t remember why. But in the comments someone wrote in a whisper: I really hate that Bill Burr is funny.

I liked that. Because at once it reflects the fact that Bill Burr is not held in the highest esteem but also that the holders of said esteem still have enough of an independent sense of humor to be able to divorce the creature from the comedy.

In general, laughter is my favorite thing. I laugh all the time. My home is full of preposterously funny children. My friends are hysterical: comedians and comedy writers. The staff of the Antagonist has a Slack channel and the writers have such a cracking, bright wit that it makes me laugh every day.

So nowadays I recline back into the comedy. As in the clip below, which is a few years old and features – among others – Kevin Hart, who has tarnished his reputation among a certain demographic over what I think were jokes in poor taste regarding….shit I forget now. But something.

Nevertheless, it also features Conan and Ice Cube and the charming Diana Chang and this is a nearly twelve minute video that had me laughing out loud several times. In this day and age, I offer it up for you to laugh at as well. This is your mission, should you choose to accept it, and if not, I understand.
